Preserving Indonesian Culture Through Batik Tulis: An Interview with Wisnu Prastow the Council of Svara DAO and Beat DAO.

Question : Batik Tulis: what is it and how is it made?

• Batik Tulis is made by writing wax liquid on the surface of the cloth with a tool called canting. Canting made of copper with a handle made of bamboo or wood. The making of hand-written batik takes approximately 1–3 months depending on the complexity and detail of batik. Because the working techniques are still traditional and manual, making hand-written batik takes longer and is more complicated than other batik techniques. In addition, the fundamental difference between written batik compared to other batik is that there are differences in each pattern, for example, a number of points or curved lines that are not the same because they are made manually. This characteristic of hand-written batik makes hand-written batik more valuable and unique compared to other batiks.
• Batik Tulis has been around since the 9th century. while Batik prints in the mid 20th century.

Question : How did you become involved with Svara Dao and why Near protocol?

• Because basically I am a musician, music producer and from childhood I was taught to love Indonesian culture. Initially I was one of the councils at Beat DAO, I was invited by Paul and previously I was introduced to Blockchain Near Protocol by Vandal and Mba Pandu.
• One time I was personally DMed by Vandal to make his own DAO specifically for Indonesia, because Vandal saw that I had an influence among Indonesian musicians. Long story short, I also have a dream to introduce Indonesian culture to the whole world.
• Then I invited one of my friends and he is a DJ who has a good reputation and experience accompanying big artists, namely DJ Teezy. Then I also invited one of the councils from Near Indonesia, namely Derymars to form Svara DAO.
• Then I had a vision that Svara DAO could shelter Artists, be it music or artwork from Southeast Asia.
• Because the culture in Indonesia with 32 provinces is very numerous and diverse, including languages, ethnicities and other traditional arts heritage, not including other Southeast Asia.

Question : What inspired you to create or make batik tulis using this traditional design?

• First of all I got this from my best friend, he is the best Batik craftsman from Indonesia and has received several invitations abroad. He has collaborated with the NBA Indiana Pacers team, Batik designs for Justin Holiday. Then on November 8, he left for England for a seminar and workshop on Batik in Europe.
• Then Svara DAO and my friend from Batik Mawar Putih had an idea to make Indonesia Batik Bounty. To attract creative designers outside Indonesia and create challenges to design their own Batik. And the 1st place winner is entitled to his physical work which has been made into Batik Tulis.

Question : Does making batik tulis benefit this project?

• So that we can read market opportunities and see the interest of the world community about Batik. So we combined the physical world and the web3 world. Next year, if possible , we will continue this project seriously by developing it and looking for developers who are interested in our project.
• And with Batik we can introduce art from Indonesia, selling it as a high artistic value. We once got a story that there was 1 batik who was 78 years old. She sold his handwritten batik products for 1 luxury house, because he made the batik when she was 18 years old.

Question : Will you establish a scholarship program to make batik tulis Will you establish a scholarship program to make batik tulis?

• while it is still not open and if this project is realized it will certainly make this scholarship program.
• We are working on the project very carefully, because we are responsible for production and payment systems that are supported by Blockchain systems.

Question : What is the most challenging part of making batik tulis?

• From my conversation with Batik craftsmen, the most difficult thing about written batik is that it can take 1 month to work on every detail and point by point (this is with the help of computer design), if they draw it manually it can take 3 months. Even very detailed designs can take up to 1 year with silk fabrics.
• Soaking Batik with the immersion technique, so that the image is not damaged, is quite difficult. They soak it several times, until the fading is gone.
